Profhilo VS Rejuran VS Skinboosters

“Which treatment is the best?”

We get this question from patients so often that we decided to write a dedicated post on this!

If you are not familiar with either of these treatments, please refer to our previous posts about:

  1. Profhilo – Profhilo: What is it all about?
  2. Skinboosters – Skinboosters vs Volite vs Rejuran
  3. Rejuran – The Lowdown on Rejuran

Why do we need to compare these treatments?

Many patients get confused between these 3 treatments, as they are all are similar in the following ways:

  1. They are all injectable treatments, usually involving multiple injections on the skin of the face.
  2. They can improve dry or aging skin with fine lines and laxity.
  3. They do not change facial contour (unlike dermal fillers).
  4. Both Profhilo and Skinboosters contain hyaluronic acid (HA), just like dermal fillers. Do note however, that unlike dermal fillers, they do not add any volume to the face as they are injected only just beneath the surface of the skin.

So, which treatment is the best?

Is Profhilo better than Rejuran?

The answer to this question is “No”. Profhilo is not better than rejuran, and vice versa.

Then, is Profhilo is better than Skinboosters?

The answer to this question is also “No”. Profhilo is not better than skinboosters, and vice versa.

So, what is the best treatment then?

In actual fact, there is no right answer to this question…

The question that patients ought to ask should be:

“What is the best treatment for me?”

All 3 treatments above have been proven to be effective, and gives significant results if done properly. However, it is essential to identify which treatment would be best suited to target the patient’s unique skin needs and concerns in terms of skin laxity, level of dryness, skin texture, pore size, acne scars, etc.

How then do we determine which treatment is best for a patient? Let’s do a quick recap on each of these treatments.

What are Skinboosters and who will benefit the most from Skinboosters?

Skinboosters, also known as injectable moisturisers, involve multiple micro-injections of pure hyaluronic acid in the skin to increase skin’s hydration level. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a water-binding molecule that can hold up to 10000 times its weight in water. Generally, the products used include but are not limited to Restylane Vital, Belotero Hydro, and Teosyal Redensity.

Patients who primarily wants skin hydration due to skin dryness, as well as some glow and radiance from the treatment will benefit most from Skinboosters.

Skinboosters require at least 3 sessions one month apart in order to achieve long-lasting radiance – except for Juvederm Volite (which only requires just 1 session). As there are many injection points and due to the depth of these injections, there may be some downtime of about 3-5 days, with a possibility of bruising. Skinboosters can be administered via manual injections or using vital injectors, or a mixture of both.

What is Rejuran and who will benefit the most from Rejuran?

Rejuran originated from South Korea, and utilizes polynucleotide which are derived from salmon DNA, to create skin healing and collagen synthesis. There are different types of Rejuran injections, namely:

  1. Rejuran Healer
  2. Rejuran I – for eye rejuvenation
  3. Rejuran S – for acne scar treatment
  4. Rejuran HB – combined with hyaluronic acid (entering Singapore market in 2020)

Patients who are concerned about acne scars, open pores and sensitive skin will benefit most from Rejuran injections.

Rejuran injections also require a minimum of 3 sessions, one month apart. Due to the placement of the material – superficial layer (basement membrane) of the skin, patients get “insect bite-like swellings” right after the treatment which usually subside within 24 hours. There may be some injection marks for the next 3 days, but if injected properly, bruising rarely happens.

Rejuran should only be administered via manual injections.

What is Profhilo and who will benefit the most from Profhilo?

As discussed in our previous blog (link), Profhilo originates from Italy. It contains both high molecular weight HA and low molecular weight HA which are treated with just thermal reaction (no chemical/BDDE) to form hybrid cooperative complexes. Profhilo works by multilevel dynamic remodelling. Therefore, in addition to skin hydration, it is also intended for improvement in skin laxity.

Patients with ageing skin that is affected by dryness and laxity will benefit the most from doing a Profhilo treatment.

Profhilo only requires 2 sessions with a one month interval, due to the presence of cooperative hybrid complexes which is more resistant to hyaluronidase breakdown.

With the BAP technique (Bio-Aesthetic Points), Profhilo only requires 5 injection points on each side of the face. The downtime is minimal – swelling on injection points is commonly reported right after the treatment but usually subsides quickly. Between the 3 treatments, Profhilo is the quickest and involves the fewest number of injections, and hence has the least downtime as well.
