If you are one of those who had to battle acne at some point in your life and did not get it treated early, you are more likely to develop acne scars. In general, the more severe the acne, the more likely it is to scar. There are a number of way to get rid of acne scars, but before that let’s look at the causes.
What causes acne scars?
When acne breakouts penetrate the skin deeply, they damage the skin and the tissue beneath it. As the acne clears, the body tries to repair this damage.
During the healing process, the body produces collagen — a substance that gives the skin support. If the body produces too little or too much collagen, you will see a scar. As we age, acne scars often become more noticeable because our skin loses collagen.
The type of scar depends on how much collagen your body makes. At Prive, our doctors will talk about 2 types of acne scars when you come by for your consultation:
The 2 types of acne scars are:
Depressed Acne Scars: If the body produces too little collagen, depressions or pits form as the skin heals. Examples include: Boxcar, Icepick or Rolling.
Raised Acne Scars: Sometimes the body produces too much collagen as it tries to heal the skin and underlying tissue. When this happens, a person develops a raised acne scar. These acne scars are more common on the back and chest.
After determining your scar-type, our doctors may recommend different treatment options that can get rid of acne scars.
- Acne Scar Surgery (called Subcision)
Acne Scar Surgery is meant to “lift the scar”. Bringing the scar closer to the surface to make it less noticeable.
- Laser Resurfacing (CO2)
Laser resurfacing such as Prive’s CO2 laser works by stimulating our body’s natural repair process to rebuild lost collagen in skin. The laser works by shining tiny beams of light on the face, heating up the dermis layer of the skin, this entire remodelling process will result in smoother, plumper and tighter skin which looks younger and less scarred.
- Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers as the term implies, fill up and plump up depressed acne scars. When fillers are injected into scars to smoothen them, they help to restore volume to the face where collagen have degenerated with age.
- RF Skin Tightening
RF skin tightening treatments such as Exilis Elite or Thermage help to stimulate the collagen and as the skin tightens, depressed acne scars become less noticeable.
Microneedling such as Scarlet delivers energy directly to the lower layers of the dermis, resulting in the creation of new collagen levels and dermal elastic fibres. This results in reduced acne scars, as well as improved skin texture and firmness.
Depending on the type of scar, your budget and your lifestyle, our doctors are able to share more details when you come by for a consultation to see which treatment suits you best. Speak with us at 96565380 or email us at [email protected] to find out more.
