Her World Doc Talk June: Undoing Circuit Breaker Damage
Circuit Breaker has been tough for everyone – and rough on your looks. Dr Karen Soh, medical director of Privé Clinic, tells you about the aesthetic treatments that can help once the restrictions are lifted.
Q: I’ve been working from home during circuit breaker and didn’t realise that sitting by the window all day was exposing my skin to so much UV rays. Is there a quick fix for the new pigmentation I’m seeing? I want my skin to look more even-toned.
A: Prevention is always better than cure so always remember to wear sunblock even while working from home! For a quick fix, Pico Laser is my recommended treatment for pigmentation as it is gentle, effective and suitable for all skin types and colours. It works on a specific wavelength to target the pigmentation selectively, leaving the surrounding areas undamaged. When the laser light is being absorbed by the pigmented lesions, the light will vibrate and break up the pigment particles into really thin “dust” to be naturally eliminated from the body over time. It also has the added benefit of brightening the overall complexion for a more radiant glow.
Different types of pigmentation may be present in the underlying depths of the skin, which will require a different laser setting and wavelength to treat. At Privé, we do not limit the number of laser passes and settings that we do in a Pico Laser session so we can effectively target the unique needs of every patient. Sometimes we may also combine Pico Laser with chemical peels or lightening creams. The treatment plan is always customised according to patients’ needs, and is best advised after a skin analysis and consultation in my clinic.
Q: Close to two months of practically zero physical activity, fantastic food deliveries and a lot of snacking and I’m now paying the price. I have a muffin top, an obvious supper belly and my face looks plumper. I want to look like my pre-circuit breaker self when I head back to the office again.
A: The best way to get rid of excess fat is to build muscles. When you have more muscles in the body, the body uses up more calories to sustain itself and burns off excess fat for energy. Emsculpt is great for that as it simultaneously builds muscle and burn fat with no downtime or pain. The treatment uses a non-invasive HIFEM® (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology to induces almost 20,000 supramaximal muscle contractions per session, almost like doing 20,000 sit-ups or crunches all while lying on the treatment bed for 30 minutes. One treatment cycle usually consists of 4-6 treatments over 4-6 weeks and patients generally love it for being fuss-free and effective.
Emsculpt is best paired with Coolsculpting – this treatment burns up to 20% of fat in the treated area in a single session. It uses controlled cooling technology to target and crystallise fat cells, effectively destroying them. The damaged fat cells will be removed by the body’s immune system naturally as waste. Coolsculpting is very versatile and can be used to treat belly fat, or even small areas like the double chin or armpit fat. For the face, I recommend pairing Coolsculpting with Exilis Elite – the former destroys facial fat while the latter uses radio frequency to reduce bloating, stimulate collagen and lift the skin for a slimmer V-shaped contour.
